Introduction:
The Latin American Council of Social Sciences (CLACSO) is a non-governmental international organization with UNESCO associate status, established in 1967. CLACSO currently brings together more than 800 research and postgraduate centres in the field of the social sciences and humanities in 55 nations of Latin America and other continents. CLACSO is the largest global network of Social Science and the Humanities with a Latin American and Caribbean perspective. CLACSO’s objectives include:
- To promote social research to combat poverty and inequality and to strengthen human rights and democratic participation.
- To contribute, through academic research and critical thinking, to the promotion of sustainable development policies in economic, social and environmental terms.
- To build bridges between social research and public policies, encouraging innovative, creative and viable actions to face the great social, educational, cultural and environmental challenges of Latin America and the Caribbean. To support the formation of networks of researchers and institutions that work in the field of Social Sciences and Humanities.
- To strengthen the academic internationalization processes in Latin America and the Caribbean. To broaden South-South and North-South cooperation and academic dialogue.
- To stimulate the development and consolidation of the social sciences and critical thinking in the poorest nations of Latin America and the Caribbean. To intervene in the national and regional public debate, contributing the perspectives and contributions of results-based social research.
- To train government agents, social activists and media professionals on social, educational, cultural and environmental issues, bringing them closer to problems addressed in the social sciences and the evidence that social research provides.
- To promote open access to Latin American and Caribbean academic production, democratizing knowledge and facilitating its use by diverse political and social actors.
